Skoda Karoq — presentation of a compact five-seater crossover Škoda took place in May 2017 in Stockholm, and in September of the same year, the novelty was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In the model range of the brand, the successor Skoda Yeti located one step below the flagship crossover Kodiaq.
The name for Škoda Karoq was borrowed from an indigenous tribe inhabiting Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska. In the Aboriginal language of Alutiik, the word "KAA'ROQ" means "car" and the word "RUQ" translates as "arrow" - the central element of the Czech brand's logo, embodying dynamism and energy. Thus, the name of the crossover is formed from a combination of two words of the language of the Eskimo people.
The exterior design of the Škoda Karok is dominated by voluminous forms, clear lines and “crystalline” elements, and the radiator grille with a chrome trim has a trapezoid shape, traditional for cars of the Czech brand. Starting with the Ambition equipment level, full LED headlights are available as an option for the crossover. In addition, narrow LED strips are located at the bottom of each headlight, which act as running lights and turn signal repeaters. Fog lights with cornering light function are also made using LED technology.
"Karok" is built on a modular platform MQB concern Volkswagen. Front suspension with McPherson struts, rear - semi-independent (for front-wheel drive cars) or independent multi-link (for all-wheel drive). The closest relative of this car in the Volkswagen concern is a crossover Seat Ateca, which matches in width (1841 mm) and wheelbase (2638 mm for mono-wheel drive and 2630 mm for all-wheel drive).
At the same time, Karoq is 19 mm (4382 mm) longer than the Spanish relative and boasts a slightly more spacious trunk with a volume of 521 liters (+11 liters compared to Ateka). In addition, thanks to the optional VarioFlex rear seat adjustment system, the volume of the cargo compartment can vary from 479 to 588 liters, and with the second row backrests folded down, it reaches an impressive 1810 liters.
For the first time, a fully digital instrument panel is available as an option for Škoda vehicles. The driver can choose one of four options for displaying information - classic, digital, minimalistic or info-profile. These options only define the basic structure of the dashboard. The driver can determine what type of information will be placed in the selected area of the panel, as well as adjust the size of the blocks. Information about the audio system, telephone, vehicle status, driver assistance systems can be located on the right, left or center of the display. By default, the Karoq is set to the usual “tidy” with arrow indicators and an info display.
A wide range of electronic assistants is available for the compact crossover. Options include Park Assist, Lane Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. Also available is Blind Spot Detect, Front Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Emergency Assistant.
The Škoda Karoq can be equipped with one of four infotainment systems: Swing audio systems (standard) and Bolero, as well as Amundsen and Columbus navigation systems. The last three are equipped with displays that mimic a glass coating. The SmartLink+ platform is compatible with the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink apps. Moreover, gesture control is available for some functions of the Columbus system. This list of equipment can be supplemented with an electric tailgate with touchless activation, a folding electric tow hitch and other useful options.
